Favorite liquid foundations

After my hate-love relationship with mineral powders ended, I decided to stick to liquid foundations. Here are some of my favorites that are gentle on my problematic skin.

Revlon Colorstay

This foundation has amazing staying power, provides great coverage (especially for age or acne spots) and is really good for oily skin. It might feel a bit thick at first and it needs to be worked on skin very quickly because it sets right away. My skin never gets oily and the foundation stays on all day. Now, for those with dry skin I recommend the mouse version: Revlon Colorstay Whipped as it’s more creamy and doesn’t set as quickly. Another option is to use regular Colorstay foundation and mix it with few sprays of a makeup-finishing mist. It will thin out the liquid and add moisture to the skin and make it easier to blend without making the skin flake. Some of my favorite mists are Urban Decay’s all nighter-it makes the makeup stay in place forever! Elf’s Makeup Mist and Set, and Evian facial spray (which also is a good pre-makeup moisturizer).

L’Oreal True Match Lumi, Chanel Vitalumiere

Even though I think True Match Lumi provides almost no coverage, I like using it on days when I don’t feel like applying heavy foundation on my skin, or don’t have any blemishes to cover.  It has a nice and glow-y finish and I found it to be identical to my skin tone. This one is definitely more suitable for dry skin rather than oily because it can get greasy throughout the day. Chanel Vitalumiere is amazing for dry skin, it’s very hydrating and lightweight. I used it when my skin got really dry from a chemical peel and it made it look radiant and smooth. As soon as my skin got back to its normal, oily-self, I didn’t like it at all, it is certainly made for dry skin types, but nevertheless it’s an amazing foundation.

Estee Lauder Double Wear, Makeup Forever Mat Velvet +

Double Wear is often compared to Revlon’s Colorstay and is considered to be a high-end equivalent of same. This is my favorite foundation, hands down. It provides amazing coverage, stays on all day and it does not look cakey.  I think it’s very important to use a moisturizer and a primer before applying this and, as a matter of fact, any other foundation. The finish is always flawless, I can’t believe I only found Estee Lauder’s Double Wear this summer! Similarly, Makeup Forever’s Mat Velvet+ is perfect for oily skin. It’s more lightweight than Double Wear and not as thick, but still provides good coverage with a matte, smooth finish.

I have used Fix+ mist from Mac, but I don’t think it’s so great after reading all the great reviews about. However, I have never tried to mix a face mist with a foundation. And I’m a bit scared that it might break me out ;/

Mineral water such as evian is just pure water so it shouldn’t break you out, but you can try to just spray it lightly before makeup on your face instead of mixing prior. Bare escentuals’ prime time is a good primer for dry flaky skin, you could get a free sample at sephora and see how it works for you:)
