How much effort (and products) does it actually take to look effortless?
Up until a few years ago, there wasn’t anything *effortless* about my makeup routine. Although, I do have to say that I’ve gotten pretty good at the cover-conceal-set routine over time. Years of having to deal with acne will do that to you.
These days, I have a quite different approach; less is better- especially when it comes to foundation.
No secret here: I’ve been obsessing over the Luminous Silk foundation from Armani and yes, it’s that good. It is one of those makeup products that fits perfectly into the *effortless* category because it blends beautifully, has buildable coverage and looks natural. I’ve been adding a little glow by mixing my foundation with Marc Jacobs Dew Drops and the combo is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.
It doesn’t get any more *effortless* than cream shadows and I just can’t get enough of Tom Ford’s duo in Paradiso. This duo is perfection for warm weather looks. Eye makeup? Takes me under two minutes; after blending the base and color, I coat my upper lashes with Maybelline’s one and only Lash Sensational. IT Cosmetics Brow Power on my brows and I’m good. Three products is all it takes.
NARS Soft Matte Concealer goes under my eyes- blends easily, applied using fingers. Even though it has such a light and soft consistency, this baby knows how to cover those dark circles. I’ve tried using it without setting it with powder as well and once I noticed that it didn’t crease, I was sold. I use it in the shade Crème Brûlée and I was afraid that it’d be a bit too pink for me (then that it’d be too orange), but it actually works perfectly.
I set it all with Hourglass Diffused Light (also an amazing powder to use just under your eyes, to brighten that area) and add more glow with Laura Mercier’s Illuminator in Indiscretion. The combination of the Luminous Silk foundation, Dew Drops and these two powder products gives me the most beautiful, glow-y, yet natural-looking complexion. Of course, I keep it very light with my highlighting products because it’s easy to go from *a nice healthy glow* to *you shine like a disco ball*; especially with Indiscretion being so highly pigmented.
Tom Ford Paradiso Duo, NARS Soft Matte Concealer in Crème Brûlée, Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 4.5, Laura Mercier Face Illuminator in Indiscretion, Hourglass Diffused Light, Marc Jacobs Dew Drops, MUFE Lip Booster (tinted) and Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Bloom.
To keep it simple and natural with my lips I’ve been using the two almost exclusively: Makeup Forever Tinted Lip Booster and Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Bloom*. Both options are beautiful and hydrating (also great if you don’t like wearing lipstick).
Few months ago, I told you all about me going makeup-free for a month, and that, obviously, is a truly *effortless* option- one I sometimes go for. Although I seem to recall a client leaving the office on one of those days telling me to “feel better!” (after I gave her a puzzled look she said “you look like you’re getting sick“). So there’s that.
What does your effortless beauty routine look like? How many products does it involve?

May 18, 2017 at 9:22 amAwesome selection of products. There’s something so freeing about not being a slave to a makeup routine that I’m finding quite refreshing as I’m getting older.

May 18, 2017 at 11:48 amNot wearing any makeup seems like an amazing idea! (not that it’s new) but I think it would be nice to be able to do it and be like ‘this is my face!!’. I’ll choose to do it on a day when I have enough sleep and no break outs… if that day ever comes tehehe

May 24, 2017 at 11:50 amhehe ;) One of the reasons why I feel more comfortable going makeup free is because my skin has improved so much. It definitely wasn’t the case when I was still battling acne.

May 18, 2017 at 1:58 pmI love the Luminous Silk Foundation. It’s so skin like. I love to use stick blushes and highlighters like the NARS Multistick to achieve my effortless everyday look because they can be blended out easily with the fingers.
Great post.

May 18, 2017 at 4:15 pmIt is funny because the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation requires a lot of work to look natural on my skin, I love it, but it is definitely something I associate with a high maintenance makeup! I really want to try the Nars Soft Matte concealer, I very much like the idea of a light and soft consistency which still has a lot of pigmentation and coverage!

May 24, 2017 at 11:51 amOh no! It takes me under a minute to do my base when I use it- just using a beauty blender. That concealer has such a nice texture, if you like matte products, you’d like it.

May 18, 2017 at 4:32 pmHaha! It’s funny how people are used to us having a it of makeup on so if there isn’t any we look ‘ill’ :)
On weekdays I go for pretty ‘effortless’ look as well but it still takes me good 20-25 minutes to do it :) x

May 24, 2017 at 11:52 amRight? I don’t know why people feel the need to comment on someone’s face looking red lol (strangers, anyway, it’s normal among friends and family lol)
Makeup is just too much fun to give it up :D

May 18, 2017 at 6:48 pmI really have to try this Armani Foundation – you just love it so much.
Is it just as good without the dew drops?
I like the idea of that – however that might be a bit complex for me AND I am not sure I can get dew drops here yet…

May 24, 2017 at 11:54 amI just put a drop or two of the foundation on my hand and add a drop of Dew Drops on top, mix with my brush or beauty blender and apply on my skin, as I usually do with foundation. I use very little foundation, so it gives a nice, dewy finish. The foundation works just as well with as it does without the drops- I only add a very tiny amount.

May 19, 2017 at 2:33 amI’m always curious to try the products you recommend and I appreciate the tips. Saves us money!!
When I was younger, makeup was all about experimenting and having fun. As I get older its more about concealing and playing up the good points. I love the feel of no makeup…just a good moisturizer and lip balm, but I have to make an effort not to scare anyone when I go out! On those days I do my eyebrows, some liner, mascara, blush and lipgloss. These are the areas of my face that disappear with no makeup.
Linda Libra Loca
May 19, 2017 at 3:02 amThat is funny, I feel like I get more experimental now that I am older, simply because I couldn’t care less. Maybe that will change when I am past my 40s. No makeup gets more difficult though. Not the foundation part, but I need a little color and definition, otherwise I will be offered a glass of water and a place to sit down…
Paula @ thirteenthoughts.com
May 24, 2017 at 11:56 amThanks Janet! I love the feel of bare face too- especially the part where I can rub my eyes freely haha ;) My eyes also tend to disappear without mascara- a concealer is another must for me. x

May 19, 2017 at 3:00 amMy routine is most days not aimed to look effortless. In my opinion effortless takes a lot more time, and I am a liner girl and rarely go a day without using it. But a natural foundation, concealer under the eyes, setting powder, blush, eyeshadow base, one to three different eyeshadows, liner and mascara are what I reach for most days, and it can be done in 15 minutes despite my son trying to eat my brushes.
Effortless takes longer, becaue I need to blend more.

May 19, 2017 at 6:29 amSometimes I feel like there is nothing in the world as effort-full as looking effort-less, I mean, hiding a fact that I spent two hours manipulating my face, hair and clothes really doesn’t come easy ;)
Paula @ thirteenthoughts.com
May 24, 2017 at 11:58 amHaha right? I go through this with hair a lot too. Every single time I see an article on how to create “effortless beach waves” it lists at least 3 different products and a bunch of tools lol

May 19, 2017 at 7:08 amI love all your posts (as I’m sure you’ve gathered by my [annoyingly?] lengthy comments), but I LOVE this one. I’ve always bee quite into skincare, but makeup? I wear it everyday, but I’m abysmal at choosing products and application. I’m always, always looking for that ‘effortless’ makeup look, but I’ve struggled to nail down what exactly that entails. I often find my face flakes like crazy, and that my foundation doesn’t properly blend it, and I’ve put it down to skincare or even the brushes I use. But I’ve never really put it down to products. (Blame me rather than the stuff!). Your recommendations are great, and they’re ones I’ve wanted to try. Thanks so much for this post! Im saving the links as we speak :o)

May 24, 2017 at 12:00 pmAww thank you so much Eire!! I love your comments, so please keep them coming :D
A good prep is definitely very important for me too- especially now that I have such dry skin. Without nice canvas, everything just looks a mess and every product clings to dry spots and only makes me feel and look worse hehe So yes, good skincare is key! :) Thank you so much!

May 19, 2017 at 8:05 amThe Giorgio Armani foundation sounds perfect, and using the Marc Jacobs drops with it must give you such a beautiful finish :) If I could try any new luxury foundation I think it would be this one. Also, the Lash Sensational is one of my favourite drugstore mascaras ever, it’s become a classic now!

I need to make a change now, but I’m still undecided on which foundation to try next. But cream textures, especially now the weather is warmer, are my favourite of all seasonal changes.

May 22, 2017 at 10:39 amEffortless is the only way to go for me, as I find that I look worse the more done up I am (go figure). I went from the typical Dream Matte Mousse – black kohl liner teen makeup golden combo to only using a brow product, spot concealer and maybe blush and powder. I also love runway makeup, so on nights out I like to focus on one feature creating something simple but daring, and keep the rest makeup free.
I’m glad my skin makes that possible, and I usually don’t feel a pressure to cover and correct, although I recently started to get hormonal acne due to medical reasons, and I have to actively push myself to get comfortable with my face. I even cut my hair short a few months ago, so I have no option, but to show it off, which is sometimes frightening, but really empowering in the long term.

August 19, 2020 at 2:03 pmI really enjoyed reading your recommendations! I like using natural and sheer products usually. I like using YSL touche éclat glow foundation which gives a fresh skin look with a sheer coverage, lancome glow drops for healthy looking shine and Mac see sheer lip sticks for a natural coral finish. These are my summer faves recently.
